7 Questions for Madeline Sewall, Breathe Architecture

Interivew

1. Who is Maddie, and what does she do?

I’m an architect & Director of Houses at sustainable architecture firm, Breathe. My rescue staghound Poppy and I live in Brunswick’s Nightingale Village, along with many friends, family, colleagues and neighbours. Day to day, I work with my team to design and deliver fossil fuel free, low carbon homes - we love to work on renovations and extensions, as well as new build and off-grid houses. I’m also really excited about making architecture and sustainability accessible to the broader community, so I spend time and energy working with others like Simple Dwelling on making resources that inspire, educate and reach others about small things we can all do to reduce our impact on climate change.

2. What got you interested in being an architect?

I was raised in a pretty arty family in California. My mom studied interior design when I was young, and I loved to watch her build models and appropriate them into dollhouses. There has always been a love and interest in art and design around me, and my sister and I have always loved making things together and for one another. Architecture is such a great type of art because it has so much influence on the way we live and view the world.

3. What is your favourite meal to cook at home, if you have all the time in the day?

Oh I’m always experimenting in the kitchen! I’m a big fan of BIG flavours. One of my favourite comfort foods to make is Jamie Oliver’s Vegetarian Chilli and cornbread. It's a one pot crowdpleaser! And it doesn’t take all day, even better.

4. In your opinion, what is fundamental to a successful home design?

I love nature, so for me connection to the outdoors is really joyful. Access to light and ventilation brings the seasons in, and keep the home comfortable year round. Landscaping and green outlooks can do a huge amount for amenity no matter how big or small your space is. My apartment balcony brings me so much joy, and I love watching the bees and butterflies enjoy it.

I also love a home that is pretty robust and can stand up to kiddos and house parties. Sustainable, fit for purpose materials that stand the test of time are key!

5. What is the most treasured item in your home?

Anything and everything handmade. My mom and my sister have made so many treasures for me over the years that are my most prized possessions including a couple of very special quilts, and embroidered folk dolls. Also my Mathmos Neo Lava lamp, I’m obsessed with it.

6. What music is on the office's playlist?

Tay Tay all day when I’m in charge.

7. What room, feature/element, or material in a home is most exciting for you to design?

I love a window seat! We incorporate window seats into most of our projects. They are such an efficient use of space, maximizing the edges of the room. I also find that while most people love an open plan kitchen, living and dining space, they also crave a quiet spot to tuck away and feel less exposed. A window seat is a perfect nook for a cup of tea in the sunbeams.
